Bridges Nepal

Bridges Nepal is an effective and viable NGO bringing Hope and Social Transformation

into communities for physical and spiritual Restoration.

Connecting people & places is vital for the growth and transformation of Nepal as a nation.

We can achive this by bringing HOPE, RESTORATION & SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

For some time we have seen a rise in Exploitation throughout Nepal's most needy villages.  There has been an increase of Human Trafficking for the entertainment industry, more migrant workers leaving their families to find well paid jobs and Child Marriage is still prevalent among tribes of Nepal.  Since the 2015 earthquakes, Human trafficking alone has increased by 500%.

Bridges Nepal has identified ways to combat these problems.  Primarily there is an urgent need for Community development and Education among the more rural villages of Nepal.  This means that we need to help them as they transition their ways of thinking in many different areas. For example: health, finances, business, education etc.

Many families and communities continue to be displaced with no homes, no schools, community centres and suffer with a very low quality of life.  With your help and donations, Bridges Nepal can facilitate water storage and filtration systems, toilets, and teach organic gardening techniques and more where they are most needed!

Please consider partnering with us and see Nepal transformed in our lifetime!

Motivation

Motivation

Facts.

Did you know that there are more slaves in the world today than in all of history??

  • 15,000 Children and women are trafficked across Nepal's boarders for domestic or sexual labour each year. Most girls who are trafficked are from very poor families from villages where they or their families are lured by false marriages, or the promises of employment or education. Approximately 50,000 women and girls work in restaurants, dance bars and massage parlors in Kathmandu and about one-third of them are exploited sexually.

  • Women contract the HIV/AIDS virus through prostitution or from their husbands who have been with prostitutes.  They are then rejected by their families and village.

  • Village People are in need of basic understanding of health care.

  • Communities need educating on simple living standards such as Filtering water, how to build an organic garden, smokeless stoves etc.

  • Young people are living with no hope or aim for education or the future, and therefore look for employment overseas thus separating them from their families. Most Overseas working Agents put them at risk by overcharging the fees; falsifying documents (e.g. employment contracts and travel documents); and trafficking which results in their passports and documents being retained by the employer.

  • Child Marriage is rampant among many tribes in Nepal.  Over a third of girls marry before 18, some are as young as 15.

  • We hope to see exploitation eradicated in Nepal and around the world very soon!

Bridges Nepal introduces Community Development projects that increase the quality of life and aid income generation which enables Nepali people to stand up for justice in their own communities!  We educate families about the dangers of Exploitation and teach them what to do if they see it happening.

The Global Goals

The Global Goals

The Global Goals are vital for transformation in our world.

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030.

Our governments have a plan to save our planet…it’s our job to make sure they stick to it.

The Global Goals are only going to work if we fight for them and you can’t fight for your rights if you don’t know what they are. We believe the Goals are only going to be completed if we can make them famous.

At Bridges Nepal, we believe in all of the goals but we have adopted these three below as the ones that we are fighting for.

Goal 1.jpg

1 - No Poverty

"In this new century, millions of people in the world's poorest countries remain imprisoned, enslaved, and in chains. They are trapped in the prison of poverty. It is time to set them free. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. And overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom."

Nelson Mandela

Targets

  • By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day 1.2.
  • By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions.
  • Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable.
  • By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of 13 property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance.
  • By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters.
  • Ensure significant mobilization of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, to implement programmes and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions.
  • Create sound policy frameworks at the national, regional and international levels, based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies, to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actions.

4 - Quality Education

"In some parts of the world, students are going to school every day. It's their normal life. But in other parts of the world, we are starving for education... it's like a precious gift. It's like a diamond…"

Malala Yousafzai

Goal 4.jpg

Targets

  • By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and Goal-4 effective learning outcomes

  • By 2030, ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university
  • By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship
  • By 2030, eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situations
  • By 2030, ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy
  • By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development
  • Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all
  • By 2020, substantially expand globally the number of scholarships available to developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States and African countries, for enrolment in higher education, including vocational training and information and communications technology, technical, engineering and scientific programmes, in developed countries and other developing countries
  • By 2030, substantially increase the supply of qualified teachers, including through international cooperation for teacher training in developing countries, especially least developed countries and small island developing states.

16 - Peace, justice and strong institutions

"Every time we turn our heads the other way when we see the law flouted, when we tolerate what we know to be wrong, when we close our eyes and ears to the corrupt because we are too busy or too frightened, when we fail to speak up and speak out, we strike a blow against freedom and decency and justice."

Robert F. Kennedy
